
CAMBRIDGE – It would be easy to lose faith and decide against becoming an organ donor after Cambridge teen Kayla Baker’s passing on New Year’s Day. Instead, people are honouring her life by signing up in droves.
Trillium Gift of Life Network, a not-for-profit agency responsible for co-ordinating organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Ontario, is reporting a record spike in organ donor registrations following the 15-year-old’s death. A typical day would see about 70 sign-ups, but during the holidays that number drops to about 50.
Officials were shocked by reports for Jan. 2, the day after Baker died surrounded by family at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.
“They went up to 131,” said Ronnie Gausie, president and chief executive officer of the network. “Why did that happen?”
