
Until this year, Travis Spire-Sweet never knew what it felt like to have a fully functioning kidney.
Spire-Sweet, a 30-year-old Kansas City acupuncturist, was the recipient of a transplant in February. Ten months later, the kidney is going strong — and so is Spire-Sweet.
“It’s like someone turned on the light,” he says. “I feel better than I ever have in my entire life.”
And not just because of the new kidney. In May, Spire-Sweet got engaged to his girlfriend — also his kidney donor — Taesha Benson, who he says saved his life.
Benson, 34, decided to give Spire-Sweet a kidney just months into their relationship. Her brave decision and the resulting transplant operation were chronicled in Ink magazine and the FYI section in February.
