Couple finds comfort as champions for organ donation

Germansville couple's daughter, who died in 2007 and whose organs were donated, will be honored on a Rose Bowl float promoting organ donation.

It's probably safe to say that few of the people and none of the parents at the Union Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schnecksville on Sunday would have blamed Bill and Chris Hankee if they had sunk into a black hole of depression after their 22-year-old daughter Krysta died unexpectedly in 2007.

Instead, the Germansville couple chose to honor her memory by agreeing to allow her organs and tissue to be donated to waiting transplant recipients and then became champions for organ donation.

At the church Sunday, the Hankees and their son, Kyle, were surrounded by scores of friends, relatives and organ recipients as they put the finishing touches on a portrait of Krysta, which will be one of 80 pictures of organ donors decorating a float in the Rose Bowl Parade on New Year's Day.
