She'd never set foot in the place before. Yet somehow the basketball courts inside Liberty Middle School probably felt familiar. Even as the teenagers sat cross-legged in quiet anticipation, I bet the sound of a bouncing basketball echoed faintly inside Dawn Futch's head.
To her right stood a table stacked with 15 new Spalding TF-1000 Classic basketballs. She had come to donate them to the Orlando school's Police Athletic League program on her son's behalf.
PAL "was a big part of his life," she said of the boy who picked up a basketball in elementary school — and was rarely seen without one after that.
Seated in the crowd, Angel Velez looked on as she spoke. Velez never got the chance to see the teen emulate Carmelo Anthony's sweet stroke while shooting hoops in Brevard County's PAL leagues. However, thanks to Michael-Gene's lifesaving assist, he's blessed — three years after he'd been on his deathbed — to see his two kids' beaming faces every morning.
