Elizabeth Dasilva received the most precious and amazing Christmas present this year from her husband Jason and a complete stranger: the gift of life.
Jason Dasilva donated his kidney to a stranger in an exchange program that in-turn provided a kidney for his wife, who has battled kidney disease since she was a child.
The couple, married nearly 20 years with two grown children, underwent surgery on Dec. 16 at Rhode Island Hospital, along with a Rhode Island woman and New Bedford man. The surgery started with two people offering the gift of a living kidney transplant to two people in desperate need of that offering.
The surgery ended with four healthy people who got home in time to spend Christmas with their families.
