Hector Cantu still has the two vertical, white scars on his left forearm from the year he spent on dialysis before he received a kidney transplant in 2003.
They are a reminder to the Beaumont resident of the fresh start he got on June 10, 2003, thanks to an organ donor.
"I've had a second chance," Cantu, 53, said, "and I'm taking it seriously."
Last year, Beaumont organ donors bestowed second chances on 27 people.
That number could be higher if more people registered as organ donors through the driver's license system, said Pam Silvestri, public affairs director at Donate Life Texas, the state's organ donation program.
