In Saturday, Nov. 16, family and friends of Dyllan Lawson gathered in remembrance of Dyllan for his 22nd birthday. Also present was Tony Hakes of the Iowa Donor Network, who accepted a check in the amount of $6,000 from the DCL Foundation. This was a portion of the funds raised through the Third Annual DCL 5K, held in Sept. of this year. The Iowa Donor Network is a non-profit agency which will use this money to educate Iowans about the importance of organ and tissue donation, as well as to provide support for donor and recipient families.
The Lawson family also plans to donate an additional $3,000 to sponsor a family for a 2014 trip to Island Dolphin Care in Key Largo, Fla. Island Dolphin Care is a non-profit agency which provides therapy programs for children with special needs or illnesses and their families. The money being donated by the DCL Foundation will help cover the cost for a five-day, family oriented program which includes one-on-one therapy in the water with dolphins and in specially-designed classrooms. Volunteers at Island Dolphin Care are currently working with workers at the University of Iowa Hospitals to locate an Iowa family whom they believe will get the most benefit from this experience.
