Across the county congregations of many religious affiliations are preparing an ecumenical celebration of life Friday through Sunday with National Donor Sabbath Weekend to recognize the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation. In Door County, 16 churches will be participating, and more than 2,500 information inserts will be distributed.
“Most major religions support organ donations, and Donor Sabbath is a great way to communicate to people about the importance of organ donation through churches,” said Marilyn Fitzgerald-White, a local volunteer helping to coordinate organ donation awareness in Door County. “Faith leaders can help support the process and make information and education available to people.”
Raising the awareness of the Wisconsin’s online donor registry is a big part of the Donor Sabbath Weekend. While Door County has a high participation rate of organ donors as indicated on drivers licenses, relying on the orange dot on the back of the license does not ensure the future decision; signing up on the Wisconsin State Organ, Tissue and Eye Donor Registry does.
