A fundraising campaign is under way for a 38-year-old Middleburg man who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at 6 months old and now needs a double-lung transplant.
Chris Fowler was placed on the transplant list in April, on the recommendation of his doctors at Shands Health Gainesville. The life-saving transplant can cost more than $500,000, so his family and friends have jumped in to raise $50,000 to put toward the bill, said family friend Sherril Rucker, who is handling public relations for the campaign.
A recent fundraiser at Whitey's Fish Camp in Middleburg brought in about $900; the Orange Park Lions Club contributed $500 from a spaghetti dinner, she said.
Another fundraiser is scheduled 11:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Arby's, 4316 Southside Blvd., in the Deerwood area. Fowler has a condominium that is currently for sale on the Southside and his mother, Charlotte Fowler, attends church in the area.
