
Vernen Foreman was the first patient to receive an organ transplant during the recent 10-day blitz at the University of Alberta Hospital. In total, 30 patients received a transplant from 12 different donors.
Vernen Foreman was working underneath a truck when he received the call from the transplant services team at the University of Alberta he would be getting a new liver.
Within hours, Foreman became one of 30 different patients to receive a new organ at the University of Alberta’s Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute within a 10-day period, setting a new record for organ transplants in Edmonton.
Between Sept. 29 to Oct. 8, the transplant services team at the U of A Hospital were able to harvest organs from three live donors and nine who had passed away to deliver three lung, two heart, eight liver, five islet, one kidney/pancreas and 11 kidney transplants to area patients.
