Talking about organ donation can be difficult but inspiring
Stephen Schumacher sat by his sister’s bedside in the hospital, and she looked at him.
“I think I’m going home,” she said.
“And she didn’t mean back to Franklin,” Schumacher recalled.
Those were the darkest days of his sister’s illness — a rare disease called amyloidosis, which causes protein to go wild in the blood, potentially leading to multiple organ failure.
There were many nights when family members thought she might die.
