
Why would you be so willing to give up a kidney?
“It’s not every day you get a chance to save a life,” said the 34-year-old marketing director for New Orleans Firemen’s Federal Credit Union.
Leininger is a familiar face in the Slidell business circles, making many public appearances as part of her job in marketing for the credit union. But most of the business associates she talks with every day would never guess she is one of those rare people who gave up one of her kidneys to save a life.
In Leininger’s case, the kidney she gave up saved the life of her sister-in-law, Kimberly “Peezie” Allred of Slidell. But Allred is not living a normal life these days with the kidney from her brother’s wife. Instead, Leininger and Allred were part of a new program some health care institutes are beginning to offer known as a “paired donor exchange.”
The program occurs when patients needing a kidney transplant “swap” willing donors to make compatible organ matches. In this case, three people received life-saving transplants from three individuals they had never met.
