
METAIRIE, La. - Two patients are about to check out of a Jefferson Parish hospital in time for the holidays, taking with them the ultimate gift.
A liver from a deceased teenager has been sliced in two and has saved the lives of a 1-year old and a 70-year-old. They are not related by blood, but the woman from California and the baby from Lafayette have a bond that's thick.
"It's a very special feeling to be with this little boy," said Karen Torrey.
Before Torrey came to Ochsner, her life was in jeopardy. An autoimmune disease badly damaged her liver and kidney.
One-year-old Mathew almost didn't thrive due to a liver malfunction.
"The most difficult part was the long wait for the liver," said translator Karen Velasquez for Mathew's mother, Leslie, who doesn't want their last name used.
