
Former Plymouth Selectman Jean Loewenberg was in her 40s before she discovered that her body might be harboring a genetic time bomb. She’d never considered the implications of polycystic kidney disease; she had no reason to – not until her mother was diagnosed and she learned the condition is genetically transmitted. She faced a 50-50 chance of also developing the disease.
While its progress is usually slow, with minimal symptoms, there is no treatment. It becomes a waiting game, because eventually, at some point, the disease suddenly escalates and the kidneys quickly deteriorate, leaving the patient with only two options – dialysis or a transplant.
