
Frank and Johanne Bent have become friends with Michael Sama, right, the recipient of a heart donation from their son Joshua, who died from injuries sustained in a car crash at age 27.
There is a space on the back of every Connecticut driver’s license designated for those who — should the circumstances arise —agree to become an organ donor. “You are encouraged to speak to your family about your organ and tissue donation decision,” it reads.
Frank Bent, of Monroe, can attest to the importance of this conversation like few others.
On May 29, 2007, Bent’s 27-year-old son, Joshua, suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident. The injury induced a coma, and after hours of work in the ER, Joshua’s doctors concluded that he was brain-dead without hope of recovery.
The Bents were heartbroken. However, a long-ago front yard conversation saved the family from making an agonizing decision: to keep Joshua on life support, or to follow through with an organ donation.
