Nine-month old Nikita Campbell will spend her first Christmas in a hospital bed, the same place she’s been for most of her sickly young life.
But the Grande Prairie infant born with a rare liver defect has already received the one present she needed most: a fighting chance at survival.
Knowing this was one miracle Santa just couldn’t provide, Nikita’s mother Miranda Riddell stepped up by donating part of her own liver for a transplant operation.
“If I didn’t donate, I don’t think she would have had enough time,” Riddell, 19, said Friday from the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. “It’s a big surgery and it’s pretty scary, but I get so emotional sometimes and feel like crying happy tears because you (realize) that you saved her, you saved her life.
