
CROSSVILLE, TENN. — The telephone interrupted their prayers.
Beverly Loyd’s family could not do much else that summer night. She had been sent home from Vanderbilt University Medical Center because she didn’t have health insurance that would cover a liver transplant. She was gasping for breath between chronic bouts of hiccups. Her legs were leaking fluid. She had been told she had two weeks to live.
Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute called, offering to bring her to Memphis, where she might get a liver before it was too late. The call came after a chain of events involving a nonprofit advocating for Medicaid expansion and a turf war between the two hospitals over organ donation territories.
