Image of Albany Med doctor will adorn float in California parade
Dr. Howard Smith's children put the last touches Thursday on a portrait of their father, who died in May after a heart attack.
They dotted the image with coffee grounds, pepper and salt.
The completed floragraph of Smith — also made of dried flowers, seeds and other organic material — will head to Pasadena, Calif., where it will be added to a float promoting organ donation, to be part of the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day.
Smith's death at 56 was unfathomable, said his wife, Joan, at a ceremony Thursday at Albany Medical Center, where he had been an anesthesiologist for 23 years. Donating his organs brought the family some solace, she said.
